World Volunteers’ First Eco Dive Adventure with Savedra – A New Wave of Youth Conservation
A Dive Into Education and Conservation: Welcome, World Volunteers!
There’s something incredibly rewarding about guiding young people through their first underwater adventure — especially when they’re doing it with purpose.
This June, we at Savedra Dive Center proudly welcomed a group of students from World Volunteers, an organisation offering service-learning and adventure travel across 12 countries. While we’ve worked with many school groups over the years, this marked our first collaboration with World Volunteers, and it was an exciting new chapter for all involved.
The result? A vibrant week of diving, discovery, conservation, and cultural immersion right here in beautiful Moalboal, Cebu.
Why World Volunteers Chose Us
Tom Woodford, World Volunteers’ Destination Manager for Thailand and the Philippines, had been exploring new dive-based experiences for student groups — and when it came to choosing a partner, he selected us for our track record working with school groups, our reputation for safety and professionalism, and our strong environmental values.
Located just a few hours from Cebu City, Moalboal offers easy access, rich marine biodiversity, and unforgettable diving. As a PADI 5 Eco Dive Center* and Green Fins Gold Member, we’ve built a program that balances high-quality scuba training with sustainable tourism and hands-on conservation.
It was a perfect match for World Volunteers’ mission.
Our Role in Making It Happen
We worked closely with Tom for over eight months to bring this vision to life — providing not only dive training, but full logistical support to ensure a smooth and meaningful student experience.
Here’s how we helped:
- Accommodation: We recommended and secured rooms at Marcosas Cottage Resort, a peaceful, student-friendly resort just minutes from our dive center. It gave the group a safe and private base while remaining close to the action.
- Meals: We arranged a mix of dining options at the resort, our own café, and carefully selected local restaurants. Every meal was tailored to the group’s dietary needs — and offered a chance to taste delicious Filipino flavours.
- Transport: We coordinated private minivan transfers from Cebu City to Moalboal, plus local transport for dive trips and excursions throughout the week — safe, reliable, and stress-free.
- Excursions: We supported the planning of off-site activities so students could explore more of the area — from relaxing beach afternoons to local markets and cultural sites.
Our team was on hand throughout the week to help manage logistics, respond to group needs, and make sure everything ran smoothly from arrival to departure.
Dive Training: Where It All Begins
Students took part in the PADI Scuba Diver course, a streamlined program that provides an internationally recognised certification in a short timeframe — ideal for school groups on a schedule.
Over two training days, we led them through:
- Confined water sessions in the pool
- Shore dives just off Panagsama Beach
- Boat dives to explore Moalboal’s vibrant reef systems
We maintain low student-to-instructor ratios to ensure safety, maximise engagement, and give each student the confidence and support they need to thrive underwater.
Highlight Dive: Moalboal’s Sardine Run
Ask any of the students about their favourite moment, and you’ll likely hear about the Sardine Run.
Just offshore, thousands of sardines gather in massive, swirling schools — a surreal sight even for experienced divers. Swimming alongside these shimmering clouds on a deep reef wall left a lasting impression on the group and brought their marine education to life in the most magical way.
Eco Action at White Beach
In keeping with World Volunteers’ focus on sustainability, the students also took part in a beach cleanup at White Beach, led by Tom and the group’s leaders.
While we weren’t involved in organising the cleanup, we were proud to see the students rolling up their sleeves and giving back to the coastline they’d come to admire. The activity made a real impact and helped reinforce the lessons learned through diving — that conservation starts with awareness and action.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
This program wasn’t just about diving. It was about building friendships, expanding worldviews, and growing personally in a supportive, exciting environment.
Many students were diving for the first time. Some were travelling away from home for the first time. And all of them came away with more than a certification — they left with unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of the natural world.
Looking Ahead: A Growing Partnership
We’re happy to share that World Volunteers has already confirmed a return trip this November, with 60 students scheduled to join us for another round of dive training and eco-learning.
This partnership is just getting started, and we’re excited to continue building programs that connect young people to the ocean — not just as divers, but as future protectors of the sea.
Why Your School Should Dive In
Scuba diving offers so much more than fun and adventure. It teaches:
- Discipline and responsibility
- Environmental awareness
- Teamwork, confidence, and cultural connection
By combining dive education with marine conservation, travel, and local experiences, we’re able to create truly impactful learning journeys for school groups.
Let’s Create Something Extraordinary Together
At Savedra Dive Center, we love working with schools, educators, and youth organisations to design custom dive and eco-experiences that are safe, educational, and unforgettable.
Whether it’s your first dive trip or part of a growing curriculum, we’re here to make it happen — from dive training to meals, transport, and more.
