Savedra Dive Centers PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) got underway July 13th 2015 in sunny Moalboal. If you are unfamiliar with Moalboal you will find us on the south west coast of Cebu, about 2 hours ride from Cebu city, here you can enjoy some of the best diving the Philippines has to offer.
On this program we had Viktor Rozhko from Ukraine and Thomas Jeong from Korea, both candidates have been diving in the Philippines for some time already, Viktor has been living it up in Bohol and Thomas in Mactan. They will both be heading back there after the IE so if you need a dive buddy in either location look them up, we’d be happy to put you in touch.
Both Candidates showed very strong dive skills and demonstrations from early on in the program, setting a great tone for the rest of the course. After a day in the classroom prepping we were off to the pool for some confined water work and presentations, the rest of the course was a nice balance of classroom work and diving.
Midway through the course we paused the hard work for a moment to remind ourselves why we signed up in the first place with a team fun dive at Pescador Island, a nice team bonding experience and an opportunity to check out a fantastic dive site, have a look at the video above.
As we progressed into the second week of the IDC we moved up a gear and spent the majority of our time focusing on teaching in an open water setting, and getting settled into our new office.
The final challenge of the program is the mock Instructor Exam (IE), here we follow the same pace as a real IE and tackle the same modules in the expected sequence. This gives candidates a real time rehearsal for the big event, it also serves as a final evaluation of their readiness for the exams.
Both candidates showed an excellent understanding of the system and gave some impressive performances in and out of the water, based on what we saw there was no hesitation on recommending them for the IE. More importantly they both saw themselves that they were ready and were able to head off to the IE confidently.
Not to overlook the efforts made by our Staff Instructor Martins and Staff Instructor in training Klaus, both provided excellent support and valuable insights from their own experience. Read more about Klaus’s experience on the PADI IDC Staff Instructor Course on a seperate blog.
As I type we are in Dumaguete for the PADI IE, both Thomas and Viktor have passed both dive theory and PADI standards exams with flying colours, they are now working on their confined water presentations for this afternoon.
PADI conduct IE’s all over the country on an annual schedule, Savedra and other dive centers typically time their IDCs to coincide with their local exam. Normally we attend the exams in Cebu city, or even better, in Moalboal itself. Savedra have two more programs scheduled for 2015, both IE’s are in Moalboal just a few minutes from the dive center.
Following the IE we head back to Moalboal for some celebrations, and then its back to work for the specialty instructor training and Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) courses. The majority of our candidates choose to add some specialties to their list of professional certifications, being able to teach more courses not only increases your earning potential, they make you more employable and most important of all allows you to teach the courses you enjoy then most.
Some of the Instructor Specialties on offer with Savedra are Gas Blender (both nitrox and trimix), digital underwater photography, enriched air, deep, night, wreck (mactan only), Sidemount (technical and recreational), emergency O2 provider, equipment specialist, navigator, search and recovery and more, for those that are up for a challenge there are also the Tec Rec programs.
If you are looking for somewhere to do your IDC or Technical Instructor training give us a call or drop us a line by email, we have programs in September 2015 and November 2015, dates for 2016 have yet to be announced but we will post them here as soon as they are available.
